Darlington Mowden Park RFC can confirm that DMP Sharks have officially withdrawn from the upcoming Women’s Championship 1 North season due to a lack of available players.
Despite best efforts to boost player retention and recruitment, the lack of numbers and experience in the current playing squad has regrettably made competing in the 2023/24 season unrealistic with under 6 weeks until the first scheduled league fixture.
After dropping out of the Premier 15s competition this summer, the squad has lost a number of players to other P15s teams whilst many others have returned to their more local Championship 1 North sides.
Following consultation with the RFU, it has been agreed to withdraw from the upcoming season with the view to re-entering the league system in 2024/25.
The club will continue to work alongside the RFU to protect and grow the women’s pathway, with a continued focus on the club’s junior girls’ sides and women’s social teams. The club's Elizabethans ladies team will compete in the Inner Warrior Series as scheduled.
With the ongoing support from key sponsors and partners, DMP will work tirelessly to promote the women’s and girls’ section this season and an update on 2024/25 will be issued in due course.
