Global superstar Tom Jones is set to perform at the Darlington Arena, home of Darlington Mowden Park RFC, on Sunday 14th June 2020 in what promises to be a truly unforgettable evening of entertainment for the North East.
Sir Tom Jones’ 50+ year career has seen him sell 100million+ records and deliver multiple world tours to legions of fans, unequivocally establishing him as one of the world’s greatest ever recording artists and live performers. Tom is indeed a living legend and one of the few musical artists whose profession began at the dawn of modern popular music but continues to have a vital recording and performing career to this day.
His extraordinary achievements were recognised in 2006 through his knighthood from Her Majesty the Queen, which sits alongside a string of prestigious music awards, including BRIT Awards for Best Male and Outstanding Contribution to Music, a Silver Clef Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Hitmaker Award from the [US] Songwriters Hall of Fame, GQ Man Of The Year, and the [UK] Music Industry Trust Award. In recent years Tom has also become synonymous with the success of the hit TV show The Voice, where he mentors new up-and-coming artists.
Lee Rust, Group Managing Director at Darlington Mowden Park and The Darlington Arena, commented: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome a truly global artist and renowned entertainer to Darlington this summer. It is the result of several years of work with LHG (Liz Hobbs Group) to deliver back to back concerts and to establish the Darlington Arena as an event venue that can host world class entertainment on behalf of our region. Our event team have worked tirelessly alongside Darlington Borough Council and Tees Valley Combined Authority and we’re now incredibly excited about the show that Sir Tom will put on this summer.’’
The concert will feature a collection of Tom’s most iconic hits such as Not Unusual, Kiss, Delilah and What’s New Pussycat, as well new material from his latest albums. His irresistible style traverses musical eras and genres, cuts across class divides and appeals to young and old, male and female, mainstream and cutting edge. Sir Tom has always been about the power of the song, the power of the voice, and as he celebrates a landmark 80th birthday this summer he continues to delight fans across the globe with epic live performances spanning pop, rock, soul, R&B, dance, country and gospel.
Liz Doogan-Hobbs MBE, CEO of LHG Events, promoter said: “We are of course thrilled to be working with Sir Tom Jones once again, having promoted and produced concerts with him across the country for several years. Tom remains one of the most popular artists in the industry and we have seen first-hand how he truly captivates an audience. Fans in Darlington are in for a treat with an evening filled with Tom’s most recognisable and popular hits. We are looking forward to seeing you all there and would urge you to buy your tickets early!”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “When it comes to concerts, Teesside has been the place to be over the last year, whether it be BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Take That, or Jess Glynne, who thrilled the crowds at Mowden Park last year. Tom Jones is another huge coup for Darlington. To have an artist perform in our region who has sold more than 100 million records and entertained countless families on TV as a judge The Voice UK shows just how far we have come. With The Killers’ Riverside concert to look forward to later this summer as well, it is going to be another huge year for music in Teesside and Darlington.”
Cllr Heather Scott, Leader of Darlington Borough Council, added: “We’re delighted such a high profile artist as Sir Tom Jones is coming to Darlington and look forward to welcoming many of his fans for what promises to be a great occasion.”
